Arthropod-borne Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat, 2nd edition
In the past years, arthropod-borne infectious diseases are gaining more importance in companion animal veterinary medicine. Due to intensified migration of small animals and climate changes, these diseases are no longer present only in their ‘traditionally’ endemic areas, they are spreading to other parts of Europe where they never existed before.
The book Arthropod-borne Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat was edited by professor Michael Day – a living legend of veterinary science in the fields of immunology and clinical pathology. It contains 14 chapters; each is written by a world-recognized expert in that area of expertise. The first four chapters are devoted to vector biology, the role of wildlife, interaction between host immune system and vectors or infectious agents and laboratory diagnostics. This makes this content easily understandable with regards to epidemiology, immunology and clinical pathology. The chapter on diagnostics is a great guide for a correct understanding of basic postulates of infectious disease diagnostics. Also, this chapter provides the ‘pros and cons’ of different tests available for use in practice and in diagnostic/reference laboratories.
The next chapters deal with various arthropod-borne infections. Most of the information has been updated since the previous edition. For each chapter, the reader will find comprehensive background, aetiology and epidemiology followed by the clinical aspects of each disease. There are numerous case studies providing a practical approach to the diseases presented in this book. The zoonotic potential and public health considerations are described throughout the book, thus implementing the ‘one health triad’.
All parts of the book are well illustrated with photographs, diagrams and tables, which makes the content easy to understand.
The book lacks several some helminth infections transmitted by arthropods. There is a detailed description only of heartworm disease and subcutaneus dirofilariosis. However, thelaziasis and Dipilidium caninum are not included, even though they are transmitted by arthropods, too.
This book is aimed at practitioners, emphasising clinical signs, diagnostics, therapy and the control of vector-borne diseases. Besides that, the book can also be of use to students of veterinary medicine because of its simple, effective and understandable approach to the basics in immunology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases in general.
All veterinary practitioners in Europe should be familiar with this issue, even though they have never seen some of those diseases. For that reason, Arthropod-borne Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat is a must-have book for a practitioner’s professional library.

Clinical echocardiography of the dog and
This book covers all current modalities of echocardiography in the dog and the cat: the classical 2D, TM, spectral and colour Doppler as well as the newer methods such as tissue Doppler, speckle tracking imaging, three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
The authors are all authorities in the world of echocardiography. Valerie Chetboul is an expert in tissue Doppler and Claudio Bussadori was one of the first to use TEE as complementary tool with interventional procedures for congenital heart diseases in the dog. Also, the collaborating authors (Oriol Domenech, Chiara Locatelli, Antonia Mavropulou, Danitza Pradelli and Joel Silva) are recognised investigators in echocardiography.
The book and the extensive accompanying website (with more than 80 videos!) complement each other.
The book consists of 5 parts. The first part describes the normal views and values of the classical echocardiography examination (2D, TM, spectral and colour Doppler) with a chapter dedicated to inter-operator and intra-operator variability. The second part does the same with the novel techniques as tissue Doppler, speckle-tracing Doppler and TEE. Part 3 describes the haemodynamic evaluation of the systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle and the right ventricle global systolic function. Part 4 runs through the acquired cardiomyopathies such as acquired valvular regurgitation, DCM and other cardiomyopathies in the dog, feline cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension, heartworm, pericardial diseases and cardiac tumours. The last and 5th part describes the congenital cardiopathies and echocardiographic evaluation before and after intervention.
The videos are clearly related to each chapter and can be very helpful. The loops can be easily loaded from the website and are each accompanied by a short comment.
This book is aimed at starting cardiologists but is also of use to advanced small animal practitioners. It gives a good overview of all possible classic and newer echocardiographic tools to investigate the function of the heart. The starting cardiologist can easily find a description accompanied with video loops of the normal heart, acquired valvular regurgitation, dilated cardiomyopathy, evaluation of feline cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial diseases, cardiac tumours and congenital diseases in dogs and cats.
The book contains a lot of valuable reference values on measurements. However, as the book is written by different contributors, it is good to remember that most French clinicians perform echocardiography on the standing dog, while others do so on the dog in the (more common) lateral recumbency position. Also, the cardiac screening of other species such as rabbits and other newer exotic companion animals is missing.
The book is written in a very user-friendly manner for overviewing these different applications in echocardiography (2D, M-mode, PW, CW, colour Doppler, tissue Doppler, speckle tracking imaging, TEE). This overview of the different disciplines in echocardiography is the strength of this book.
In summary, this book is highly valuable to all veterinarians with an interest in cardiology. The video loops will be of particular value to the budding cardiologist, while the more advanced clinician may use the book to look up the newer techniques in echocardiography.

Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia: the 5th edition of Lumb & Jones
Since its first edition in 1973, Veterinary Anesthesia has been considered the reference textbook and a comprehensive source of scientific knowledge on veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia. The discipline finally gained a well-deserved and respected place among other veterinary specialties and continues to thrive. A second edition followed in 1984, a third in 1996 and a fourth in 2007.
The latest, fifth edition of Lumb and Jones Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (over 1,000 pages) has 85 contributing authors, offering a wide range of scientific and clinical experience relevant to the modern clinical management of anaesthesia and analgesia, updated according to 2015 research data.
The book contains 12 sections, covering general topics, pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology, comparative anaesthesia and analgesia for different species and settings (dogs and cats, shelter population, equine patients, ruminants and swine, laboratory animals, zoo animals and wildlife, aquatic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and birds) and for selected patients and procedures (ophthalmic, neonatal / paediatric, senior / geriatric, cancer and orthopaedic patients).
The fifth edition contains a new helpful section on body fluids (acid-base physiology, treatment of coagulation and platelet disorders, clinical pharmacology and administration of fluid, electrolyte and blood component solutions) and thermoregulation in the perioperative period. The section on the nervous system section is extended and includes the physiology, pathophysiology and anaesthetic management of patients with neurological disease along with a new chapter dedicated to nociception and pain. The assessment and the treatment of pain are discussed in a detailed manner, from a – complex – physiological and pathophysiological viewpoint. Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment alternatives are described according to the significant advances made in the basic understanding of pain processing and modulation.
Unlike the previous edition, the rehabilitation, palliative analgesia and acupuncture chapters are not included. This is unfortunate because practitioners are looking for solutions regarding pain management, and without these chapters, this edition is less practical and more theoretical.
However, new chapters on anaesthesia and analgesia for patients receiving a renal transplant, cardiac peacemaker implantation or cardiopulmonary bypass have been added – very useful in view of the recent progress made in this area. A dedicated section regarding patient and personnel safety consideration for diagnostic imaging (radiography and magnetic resonance imaging) and laser procedures has been added, as well.
The fifth edition of Lumb and Jones Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia is a reference book for veterinary practice, to be owned by all clinicians working on a daily basis with anaesthesia of companion animals or different types of challenging patients and procedures requiring anaesthesia. It is also highly recommended reading material for all ECVAA residents.
The book covers anaesthesia and analgesia in a very practical manner, combining scientific updates with clinical approaches for a vast number of domestic and wildlife, zoo and laboratory animal species. This new edition is a valuable and very accessible resource for the veterinary practitioner.
