Georgia joins FECAVA

The Georgia Small Animal Veterinary Association (Geosava) became the 39th FECAVA member at the recent Council meeting in Helsinki. The Geosava president, Elena Chichinadze, gave a short presentation of the association, founded in 2013.

Currently, the association has 31 members, and it is the only organisation representing companion animal veterinarians in the country. There is one veterinary faculty, at the Agrarian University of Georgia in Tblisi.

Georgia (pop. 4.5 million) lies on the Black Sea and is bordered in the north by Russia, and in the south by Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Aldo Vezzoni receives ACVS Merit Award 2013

At the Symposium of the American College of Veterinary Surgery (ACVS) in October, Aldo Vezzoni (Cremona, Italy) received the 2013 ACVS Merit Award in recognition of his work in the field of juvenile canine orthopaedics. He is the first European surgeon to receive this distinction.

Dr. Vezzoni’s dedication to the veterinary profession is evident in his founding or participation in founding numerous organizations including FECAVA, the Italian Companion Animal Veterinary Society (SCIVAC) and the Italian Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics (SIOVET). He also developed the Ortho VetSuperSite website for the European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology (ESVOT) and was instrumental in creating a joint venture between ESVOT and the (American) Veterinary Orthopedic Society to organize the World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress every four years.

The ACVS Merit Award was established to ‘acknowledge contributions to the progress of veterinary surgery made by an individual from outside the American College of Veterinary Surgeons’. The award is given to an individual who has a career dominated by major and on-going contributions to the art and science of veterinary surgery.
